A Brief History of Sojourners Family Resource Center
Sojourners Family Resource Center, founded in 1993, provides counseling and psychotherapy to adolescents, adults, couples, and families. We also offer workshops, seminars, and topic-specific, short-term groups. In addition, we serve as consultants to congregations, religious and other not-for-profit organizations, as well as a broad range of businesses. Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Michael Avila, a licensed marriage and family therapist and certified social worker, and Clinical Director, Vicki Avila, a licensed clinical social worker, each bring their unique experience and areas of expertise to Sojourners, in order to serve the needs of the community.
The inspiration for Sojourners came from the increasing number of people entering counseling who were experiencing a breakdown in relationships and/or an individual sense of feeling profoundly disconnected in the world. In response to these needs, we provide an atmosphere where you can work toward creating or restoring this sense of connection.
Our mission is to make the time during which you journey with us a process of healing and self-discovery. Whether we work with you as an individual, couple, or family, we use our extensive experience and expertise to help you recognize and understand the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are keeping you from fostering lasting positive relationships and/or developing a sense of your own value and self-worth.
In the development of your relationship with your therapist, you will begin to work through these barriers. You will learn how to manage your emotions, and to establish new ways of thinking and new patterns of behavior. As this occurs, you will find that your relationships improve significantly and that your own sense of value and worth will be transformed. This will enable you to confidently move beyond the difficulties that brought you into counseling and to achieve greater happiness and fulfillment.
